Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has completed monsoon preparedness measures across the district following forecasts predicting moderate rainfall on June 4 and 5 and heavy rain from June 6 to 10.

Weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have prompted authorities to strengthen disaster management arrangements and emergency response systems.

As part of the preparations, the district administration has identified 294 relief centres and appointed nodal officers to oversee operations at each facility. Special attention has also been given to areas vulnerable to landslides.

Officials said the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has identified 439 landslide-prone locations in the district. Spotters are being deployed and trained at these sites to monitor conditions and provide early warnings in the event of any threat.

Local bodies have undertaken desilting and cleaning of drains to facilitate smooth flow of rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding. The administration has also instructed departments concerned to inspect government schools, anganwadi centres, hostels, primary health centres and other public buildings to ensure safety during the monsoon.

According to officials, both BSNL and HESCOM have stocked essential materials and arranged backup resources to address possible disruptions to communication and electricity services during adverse weather conditions.

The District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) has been functioning round the clock, while disaster management control rooms have been activated in all taluks to enable quick response during emergencies.

The district administration has advised residents to remain alert, follow official weather advisories and contact district or taluk-level control rooms in case of any emergency.
