BENGALURU: Police are going into a huddle this weekend to discuss the modalities of issuing background verification certificates to cabbies operating in Bengaluru. They have set a December 31 deadline for the task. Police are working on a where application and verification would be online. They are wary as they are already handling a similar task with 60,000-odd school teaching and nonteaching staff. Compounding their woes is the fact that no arm of the government has the exact number of cabbies op erating in the city, police sources admitted. Taxi-hailing aggregator Uber has asked its drivers to resubmit their documents for verification, sources privy to the development said. The company did not respond to messages seeking a confirmation. Transport authorities have made it clear that no taxi operator or cab-hailing service faces any ban in the Karnataka. But the firms have been told to obtain city taxi permits at the earliest to legalize their operations.
