Bengaluru: The craze for selfies claimed the lives of two young techies when they were swept away in Cauvery river at Mekedatu in Ramanagara district on Sunday while trying to click a picture of themselves.
The deceased - Shamir Rahman (29) and Bhavani Shankar(29), natives of Bidar were employed in a software company.
Since it was a holiday, the duo along with two other friends were picnicking at the spot. Sameer slipped and fell into the water while clicking selfie, and seeing his friend in trouble, Bhavani leapt into the water in a bid to save him. However they both were washed away in the gushing river water.
The police who arrived at the spot started a search operation for the youth. However, the bodies of the techies were untraced when reports last came in. Police have informed the families of the victims about the incident.
The rivers are in full spate due to increased flow following release of excess water from the Krishna Raja Sagar dam.
