Bangalore : Congress Legislative Party (CLP) on Friday formally chose Siddaramaiah as its leader, paving the way for his appointment as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Defence Minister A K Antony, who is also Congress General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, made the formal announcement after a CLP meeting held at the party office in Bangalore.
Former Minister and senior Congress leader R V Deshpande told reporters gathered outside the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office that Mr Siddaramaiah was "unanimously" chosen as the CLP leader.
Mr Siddaramaiah is expected to be sworn-in as the Chief Minister on Monday. Large crowds that had gathered outside the KPCC office while the crucial CLP meeting was underway burst into celebrations soon after it was announced that Mr Siddaramaiah has been chosen to head the next government.
