Shahjahanpur law student, who accused Chinmayanand of rape, arrested

The law student from Shahjahanpur who accused former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand of rape was on Wednesday arrested by the Special Investigation Team in an extortion case filed by him. The student was reportedly picked up from her house in the central Uttar Pradesh town. Police is yet to issue an official statement on the arrest as it came a day after a local court in Shahjahanpur admitted her application for anticipatory bail, to be now heard on September 26, following the Allahabad High Court's refusal to provide her any relief against arrest. The SIT has charged the law student with involvement in the extortion case filed by Mr. Chinmayanand. Along with her three male friends, the law student was booked for extortion, disappearance of evidence and criminal intimidation, among other sections. The student featured as the fourth name among the accused in the case — she was listed as "Miss A" — in a single-page press release issued by the SIT, whose chief Naveen Arora said they had prima facie evidence of her involvement. Three others identified as Sanjay Singh, Sachin Sengar and Vikram alias Durgesh were arrested on charges of sending extortion messages to Mr. Chinmayanand demanding ₹5 crore from him.
