Bhatkal: Authorities in Bhatkal have stepped up security and precautionary arrangements ahead of Bakrid celebrations scheduled on May 28, with all taluk-level officials directed to remain at their headquarters till May 30 to maintain peace and public order.

The directions were issued during a peace committee meeting held at the Assistant Commissioner’s office under the chairmanship of Assistant Commissioner Mahesh.

Addressing the meeting, he said elaborate arrangements had been made across the taluk in view of the festival and officials had been instructed to remain available at their respective headquarters as a preventive measure.

He also said liquor outlets would remain closed during the festival period as per the Deputy Commissioner’s directions.

Authorities have further been instructed to ensure proper garbage collection and disposal of waste to maintain hygiene and cleanliness during the celebrations.

Speaking at the meeting, Police Inspector Divakar warned that strict action would be taken against those spreading rumours or provocative content on social media platforms that could disturb communal harmony.

He said two to three sensitive incidents had recently been reported in Bhatkal, raising concerns over circulation of misleading and unverified messages online. The police department, he said, is closely monitoring social media activity to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The officer further said people found unnecessarily roaming on roads after midnight would be questioned and action would be initiated wherever required.

He also warned that individuals dumping garbage and waste indiscriminately would be identified and penalised.
