Suresh Raina has been named as the replacement for Ambati Rayudu in the Indian squad for the ODI series in England, the BCCI confirmed on Saturday (June 16). Rayudu, who initially made a comeback to the ODI squad following an impressive IPL season for Chennai Super Kings, failed to clear the fitness test at the NCA in Bengaluru on Friday, following which he has been axed.
Clearing the yo-yo test has become a necessity in terms of selection in the Indian squad. Recently, pacer Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson were dropped from the Indian Test squad and the 'A' respectively after failing to clear it.
Raina's recall will now keep his World Cup hopes alive, after having not been considered for 50-overs cricket in recent times. His last ODI appearance came against South Africa in October 2015. Despite not being at his usual best, Raina ended up scoring 445 runs in CSK's title-winning campaign at an average of 37. With the likes of Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav out of the squad, Raina will jostle with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Dinesh Karthik for a spot in the middle order.
