Railways collect penalty worth Rs 2.04 crore from ticketless passengers

BANGALORE: Continuing intensive checks on menace of ticketless travelling and unbooked luggage in trains, the railway authorities of the Bangalore division have collected Rs 2.04 crore from offenders in the first three months of 2014. In the check conducted during the last three months (from January to March 2014), the deploying ticket checking and security personnel of the division was able to apprehend 52,505 cases of ticketless travellers, unbooked luggage and excess fare and earnings to the tune of Rs 2.04 crores was realized. This is 21% cases more than the checks conducted during the same period last year. Similarly the revenue has also increased by 23% when compared to last year. Last year, 43,310 cases were booked against offenders and more than Rs 1.66 crore of revenue was collected. Apart from the mentioned, penalties are imposed on smoking, littering and other nuisances created in the railway station premises. -TOI
