Bhatkal, April 10: On the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr, a large-scale welfare initiative was carried out in Bhatkal and surrounding areas, with 1,20,000 kilograms of rice distributed to 1,859 underprivileged families as part of the annual Fitra program. The Central Fitra Committee’s Convener, Maulana Mohammed Ilyas Jakati Nadwi, confirmed the details of this initiative, which is rooted in the Islamic tradition of charity during Ramadan.
To facilitate the smooth and organised distribution, 58 zones were created across Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Shirur, and nearby localities. Rice collected from different localities was systematically distributed to eligible families, with major support coming from members of the Bhatkali Muslim diaspora, particularly from the Gulf countries. Their generous contributions played a significant role in ensuring the success of the initiative.
Apart from Bhatkal town, rice was distributed in nearby regions including Ankola, Honnavar, Kumta, and Shirur. The distribution also reached remote villages in the Sharavathi belt, such as Gersuppa, Herangadi, and Saralgi, which have been included in the initiative for the past three years.
Each family received approximately 50 kilograms of rice. In certain cases—particularly for large, low-income households and families with persons with disabilities—the quantity was increased up to 100 kilograms. Additionally, for the fourth year in a row, each beneficiary family received 5 kilograms of premium Basmati rice, enhancing the quality of the Eid preparations for those in need.
Speaking to the media, Maulana Ilyas said that this community-driven charitable program has been active in Bhatkal for over four decades. He acknowledged the efforts of local youth groups, sports centers, religious scholars, and international Bhatkali organizations who have consistently supported the initiative through donations and volunteer efforts.
To evaluate the execution of this year’s distribution and strengthen coordination for future editions, an Eid-Milan session was organized at Mohkama Shariah Hall near Khalifa Jamia Masjid. The meeting was hosted by Cosmos Sports Center and attended by representatives of Bhatkali Jamaats from the Gulf, officials from educational and social institutions, community activists, and scholars. Discussions were held on improving operational efficiency, identifying more families in need, and enhancing transparency in future Fitra distribution campaigns.
