Nasim Zaidi takes over as new chief election commissioner

NEW DELHI: The new chief election commissioner, S Nasim Zaidi, on Sunday said the EC would soon devise a long-term strategic plan aimed at strengthening the institution, making the election operation more efficient and raising voter awareness. Speaking to mediapersons soon after taking charge as CEC, Zaidi said the EC would focus on voter-centric activities from enrollment to enable them with e-services. "EC's strategic plan for 10-15 years shall be based on principles of independence, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness and measurable outputs," he stated. Zaidi, who was appointed as election commissioner in August 2012 and elevated to CEC's post last week, resolved to take forward the poll panel's vision of "free and fair elections based on error-free and authenticated electoral roll with higher level of participation of voters with inclusiveness".
