Mangaluru: The police arrested six persons on Monday, August 20, for assaulting an elderly man on the suspicion of him being a child kidnapper.
The accused have been identified as Sheikh Rizwan (35), Ajmal Khan (43), Muhammed Irfan (38), Muhammed Imran (42), Muhammed Imthiaz (42) and Shahnawaz Dharmasthala (19), all residents of Gurukambala village near Bajpe.
On Sunday, a group caught hold of Hamza (63) who had gone to Gurukambala along with his friend to collect donations on the occasion of Bakrid. Accusing that Hamza belonged to a gang of child kidnappers, the crowd tied him to a pole and beat him up, black and blue. Hamza's friend, however, ran away and escaped from the scene. The police intervened in the nick of time, saved Hamza from the wrath of the mob and admitted him to Wenlock Hospital for medical care.
In his complaint to the Bajpe Police, Hamza has accused that at least 40 people were in the mob.
