Mangaluru: Following the traffic menace that was caused because of a programme held at Kallapu two days ago, the licence of the marriage hall may get cancelled. Around half-a-dozen callers vented their anger against the hall with city police commissioner T R Suresh during the phone-in programme on Friday.
Traffic had come to a standstill in the area for three hours on Wednesday and vehicles up for around 5km, on the Mangaluru-Kasaragod NH-66. The traffic jam arose due to a function held on land beside the wedding hall after the invitees of the function chose to haphazardly park their vehicles on either sides of the highway.
Mr Suresh said that criminal proceedings have been initiated against the owner of the hall in Kallapu. The police department will also recommend to the city municipal council to cancel the trade licence of the hall, he informed.
One caller informed on how when he called up to register a complaint, the city police shifted responsibility to other units within the department. He explained that when he called Ullal police on the matter, he was asked to take the matter up with the traffic police who in turn replied that it was beyond their jurisdiction and that it was the responsibility of Ullal police. Responding to this issue, Mr Suresh said that he will hold an internal inquiry and sensitise his men on such issues,
Traffic jams are the result of the police department not being kept in the loop about private events in the city. The police departments talk to the establishment and sensitize them of their duties, added the commissioner.
