Karwar: Group of students allegedly harass girl, vandalize hotel; 54 including lecturers detained

An alleged drunken brawl led to a hotel being vandalised in Karwar and the detention of over fifty students from Mandya in Karwar. The incident occurred over the weekend. Cases were filed against five individuals including two lecturers. The incident took place on Friday night when a group of 54 students and lecturers from BGS Polytechnic College in Mandya were returning from a Goa trip via Karwar. The group reportedly had brought utensils and groceries and stopped their bus to cook on the Ravindranath Tagore beach in front of Drive-In Hotel. Eve-teasing According to the police, some students, who were reportedly in an inebriated state, teased a girl at the beach. Taking exception to this, a local advised the students not to indulge in eve-teasing. However, the advice reportedly angered the students who picked up a quarrel with the man. The students, led by their lecturers, thrashed him. The man then approached the hotel staff and sought their help. The hotel rushed to the beach and warned the students and advised them to vacate. After a while, the bus returned to the spot and the students and the lecturers reportedly barged into the hotel and vandalised the premises. On being alerted by the hotel owner, the Karwar Town Police rushed to the spot and detained all the 54 students and the lecturers. Let off The police subsequently registered a case against five people including two lecturers Shrinivas Raghu and Suresh. The students and the lecturers were let off after they furnished personal bonds of surety. Meanwhile, different versions of the incident have emerged, the Karwar police are investigating.
