Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrated throughout state

Bangalore/Mangalore/Bhatkal - On the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has announced that regions currently being called as 'Hyderabad-Karnataka' and 'Mumbai-Karnataka', will be re-named.

Delivering his address at the official Rajyotsava celebration function at Sri Kanteerava Stadium in the heart of Bangalore on Monday, Yeddyurappa said "Many litt?teurs have requested that the names of those regions be changed. In the days to come, after consultation and taking opinions from various people, the new names for these regions would be decided upon", the Chief Minister announced.

"My government will make all efforts to promote the interests of Kannada language and the state," said Yeddyurappa, who inaugurated the function.

Colourful cultural programmes and march pasts by National Cadet Corps across Karnataka marked the 55th foundation day of the state on the occasion.

Around 12,000 school students presented various cultural programmes in front of a cheering audience.

Functions were held in all the main towns of the state's 30 districts, with Yeddyurappa's cabinet colleagues taking part in police march pasts and other cultural programmes.

In Chikmagalur, District in charge Minister M P Renukachrya, who is also the State Excise Minister, had an embarrassing experience as some miscreants barged into the stadium and waved black flags before the Minister.

In Belgaum, Maharastra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) observed the day as 'black day' and took out a rally.

In New Delhi, the day was celebrated at Karnataka Bhavan with Governor H.R. Bhardwaj in attendance.

The capital also saw a demonstration by Codava National Council, an organisation of people from Kodagu district, seeking special status for the district, known for its coffee plantations and orange orchards.

In Bhatkal, a procession comprising of school students was held under the leadership of Bhatkal MLA JD Naik. The procession was started from New English School and after passing through Shamsuddin circle, NH 17 and main road converted into a public gathering at Islamia Anglo Urdu High School grounds where Bhatkal AC Dr Anuradha hoisted the Karnataka flag and the program was formally inaugurated. After that school children presented several colourful cuultural programs.

Among prominent personalities who graced the occasion included MLA Mr JD Naik, TMC President Inayatullah Shabandri, AC Dr Anuradha, DySP Mr M Narayan, Kannada Sahitya Parishad President Dr. Ramesh Saraf, Taluka Panchayath President Gori Moger, BEO Mr Devidas Moger and Anjuman Secretary Mr. Abdul Azeem Ambari.
