Abu Dhabi: Residents will soon be able to register for ID cards at selected Empost mail offices all over the country, apart from the registration centres of Emirates Identity Authority (Eida), a senior official told Gulf News on Saturday.

The new initiative in partnership with Empost will begin in Abu Dhabi with the opening of Eida registration counters in four post offices in Abu Dhabi within two months, Dr Ali Al Khoury, Director General of Eida, said.

"The project is part of our motto to 'be everywhere', to reach out to the residents who have not yet registered for ID cards," he said. "Empost has hundreds of post offices in the country; with their partnership we can be everywhere," the official said.

It is part of Eida's new strategy to open new registration channels including the opening of registration centres in primary medical centres conducting visa medical tests - to link visa issuance and renewal process with ID card registration, he said.

The project will be phased in. The first counters will be opened at Abu Dhabi central post office, and the post offices in Al Bateen, Al Falah, and Tourist Club Area, he said.

In the next stage, the post offices in Mussaffah, Khalifa City, Baniyas and Al Raha will be considered, Al Khoury said.

The post offices which satisfy the Eida's criterion of space will be selected for the project, the official said. The director general said an Eida team is inspecting the post offices all over the country to select the post offices for the project.

The counters in post offices will entertain walk- in registrations in the beginning but will gradually adopt appointment based system, the official said.

EIDA will open a new registration centre in Abu Dhabi city soon, said Dr AL Khoury.

This is apart form the planned new centre in primary medical centre in Mussaffah, he said. As Gulf News reported earlier, the centre in Mussaffah will link the visa issuance and renewal process with ID card registration

By appointment: Strict timing

Eida announced that its registration centres in Mussaffah and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centres have adopted an appointment-based registration system since last week.

Only those who receive the appointment after submitting the applications at typing centres will be entertained. The appointment has been sent via SMS and the applicants have to strictly follow the time, Eida said.
