Head-on crash between two cars near Venkatapur bridge in Bhatkal leaves six injured

Bhatkal: Six persons were injured after two cars collided head-on on National Highway-66 near the Venkatapur bridge in Bhatkal late Wednesday night.

According to sources, one of the vehicles was travelling towards Honnavar from Bhatkal when it rammed into another car carrying passengers from Bantwal near Mangaluru.

The injured have been identified as Mohammed Mushafar (26), Mohammed Ashraf Ismail (34), Fauzia, Mohammed Ashraf (29), Abdul Khader Ajwal (21) and Mohammed Asthan (19).

Police said the Bhatkal-bound car was being driven by Bhimappa Hanumanthappa Ganjur of Haveri district. He escaped without injuries.

Following the accident, the injured persons were shifted to a nearby private hospital in a highway patrol vehicle and given treatment.

Sources said all passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision and the airbags in both vehicles opened on impact, preventing fatalities and reducing the seriousness of the injuries.

Mallikarjun Korani visited the spot and carried out an inspection. A case has been registered and investigation is in progress.
