Food Poisoning - 50 Students of St Joseph's School Taken Ill

Mangalore - 09 Feb 2012: Around 50 students of St Joseph's Higher Primary School, Kankanady, have been taken ill after they consumed lunch, here on Thursday February 9. The students have been admitted to Father Muller Hospital, and according to sources, more are being taken for treatment.

The mid-day meal for the school's students is prepared on a daily basis by a lady from Jeppu, who also caters to several others schools in the city. Though she prepared food for the entire school, only a particular section of the students fell ill. Sources stated that it was the sambar served at lunch that led to the food poisoning. About 200 students had taken lunch, and about 50 of them are already hospitalised. The total number of students who have fallen sick is yet to be ascertained. Parents rushed to the school and to the hospital as soon as the news broke.

Speaking to reporters, Sr Sheryl of St Joseph Higher Primary School said that allstudents who were admitted for food poisoning are out of danger, and one by one, theyare getting discharged. A few students who are still in the hospital will be out by evening, she added.

She also said that 13 students wereadmitted while the others weretreated in the outpatient department and sent home.

When asked about the cause for the food poisoning, she said that it could not be pointed out at this stagewithout enquiry. "A teacher also had lunch, but only students were affected. I do not know what happened," she said.
