Bengaluru: Dinesh Gundu Rao was elevated to the post of the president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee )KPCC) by the Congress high command on Wednesday, July 4. Before this, he was the working president of KPCC having the in-charge of South Karnataka region. Many Congress leaders including H K Patil, M B Patil and Eshwar Khandre were speculated to be contenders for the post. However, in a press release, Congress National Secretary Ashok Gehlot confirmed that Dinesh will be the new KPCC President. The five-time MLA from Gandhinagar in Bengaluru will take over from Dr. G Parameshwara. Dr. Parameshwara, who was made the deputy chief minister in the Janata Dal (S)-Congress coalition government, will be vacating the position after eight years. Known for his organisational skills, Congress hopes to keep the party ranks in order, in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2019. It is believed that former chief minister Siddaramaiah recommended Rao's name for the post. Many opined that this is Congress leadership's balancing act intended to avoid ruffling feathers of the power centres within the party. The latest announcement lays to rest the speculations about Water Resources Minister and Congress’ troubleshooter D K Shivakumar's elevation to the KPCC president's post as a compromise for missing out on Deputy CM's post.
