David Warner ton helps Australia garner lead

After incessant drizzle washed out the entire opening session on the third day of the second Test at Chittagong, Australia piled on the agony for the hosts by notching up a lead for the first time in this two-match Test series. Riding on a stellar ton from David Warner - his second in a row - the tourists kept Bangladesh waiting on the field for long, before the hosts nipped out the wicket of the centurion to find some solace. At the stroke of Tea, Hilton Cartwright was sent back as well, as Australia ended the session on 321 for 5, leading by 16 runs with Glenn Maxwell batting on 25.
Earlier in the day, the groundsmen at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium put in the hard yards to ensure play resumed soon after the luncheon interval. Opening the bowling on Wednesday (September 6), Shakib Al Hasan got his first ball to spin past an attempted cut from Warner, only to beat the outside edge by a whisker. However, both Warner and Peter Handscomb took stock of the conditions quickly to keep the hosts at bay.
The pitch hadn't deteriorated as much as the hosts would've anticipated it to but an anxious Warner was kept waiting on 99. His desperation resulted in the wicket of his partner when a silly misunderstanding resulted in Handscomb's run-out. Warner tucked one towards mid-wicket before pressing for a single but a sudden change of mind left his partner halfway up the wicket. Although, the right-hander threw in a dive, a direct hit from Shakib found him well short.
Warner stayed on 99 for as many as 16 balls before he broke the shackles to lift one over mid on to raise his second hundred on the trot. Chances continued to be spilled as Maxwell benefitted from one this time, when he shoved his bat at an away-going ball from Mustafizur Rahman, and Mehidy Hasan at gully dropped a sitter. Maxwell continued to jab at Mustafizur's deliveries but continued to survive too. While the left-armer should have had Maxwell, he nipped out the prized wicket of Warner when he swatted one straight to leg gully where Imrul Kayes juggled a few times before grabbing the chance.
Cartwright, the new man, walked in to bat on top gear and offered a caught and bowled opportunity to Mehidy, who went on to drop his second of the day. Wincing in pain after being hit on the ribs by that straight punch, Mehidy continued to bowl and got his revenge for the spilled catch at the stroke of Tea. Cartwright was drawn forward to a turning ball, which he edged to first slip. Despite the late blows, Australia gathered a lead of 16 runs.
