Customs officials catch two passengers smuggling gold worth Rs 11.44 lakh at Mangaluru Airport

Mangaluru, October 19, 2023: Mangaluru International Airport’s customs authorities successfully apprehended two passengers for smuggling gold worth Rs 11.44 lakh on October 17.
The customs officers at Mangaluru Customs had identified these individuals, a male and a female, through profiling as they were traveling from Dubai to Mangaluru via Air India Express flight IX 814. During the inspection, the male passenger, who was wearing a mask, exhibited unusual behavior. Subsequent investigation revealed that he had concealed two gold cut pieces inside his mouth. Similarly, upon closer examination of the female passenger, it was discovered that she had hidden gold in the form of small rhodium-coated beads within her hair rubber band.
In both cases, a total of 191 grains (net) of 24-carat gold, valued at Rs 11,44,090, were seized from these two passengers.
