Congress petitions Election Commission against Yeddyurappa

The Congress on Saturday submitted a petition to the Election Commission of India seeking criminal proceedings against State BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa for allegedly violating the poll code of conduct during a campaign in Gundlupet constituency. During the campaign, Mr. Yeddurappa allegedly said that he would “adopt the constituency” and undertake development work after becoming the Chief Minister of the State if they voted for BJP candidate Niranjan Kumar in the byelections. The Congress also alleged that Mr. Yeddyurappa demanded the voters to take an oath in the name of God stating that they are going to vote for the BJP on April 9.

V.S. Ugrappa, MLC and Congress leader, in a petition to the Chief Electoral Officer, said the State BJP president has violated provisions of the 1951 Peoples’ Representative Act and demanded that the Election Commission take action against him.
