Byndoor: Five fishermen rescued after boat capsizes off Shirur coast

Byndoor, Jul 20: Five fishermen had a narrow escape after their fishing boat capsized due to rough sea conditions near Shirur while they were returning from Malpe after fishing.

The fishermen have been identified as Nagaraj Kharvi, Yogeesh Kharvi, Raju Kharvi, Manjunath Kharvi, and another Nagaraj Kharvi, all residents of Tarapathi Alvekodi in Paduvari village.

According to reports, the fishermen were returning towards Bhatkal after completing their fishing trip from Malpe when their boat was struck by a giant wave triggered by strong winds and rain near Koklerakallu off Shirur, causing it to capsize. As all five were wearing life jackets, they escaped without loss of life.

Another fisherman, Shekhar Kharvi, who was fishing nearby, noticed the mishap and immediately rushed to the spot, rescuing all five fishermen.

The boat was completely damaged in the incident. The engine, GPS equipment, fish finder, five sets of fishing nets, and cash amounting to Rs 30,000 were lost in the sea. The total loss is estimated to be over Rs 7 lac.

Officials of the Coastal Security Police visited the spot and conducted a mahazar.
