17 Karnataka districts, 129 taluks still face rain deficit despite monsoon revival

Bengaluru, Jul 7: Although rainfall has picked up across several parts of Karnataka since the first week of July and reservoir inflows have increased, 17 districts and 129 taluks in the state continue to face a rainfall deficit as of July 6.
According to the five-week rainfall report released by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) on Monday, Vijayanagara district has recorded the most severe rainfall deficit. The district has received only 37 mm of rainfall so far, registering a 61 per cent deficit. However, compared to the previous week, the number of districts receiving normal rainfall has increased, with 13 districts now falling under the normal rainfall category.
The report states that only five taluks in the state have received excess rainfall, while 25 taluks have recorded above-normal rainfall. Rainfall has been normal in 70 taluks, whereas 129 taluks continue to experience a rainfall deficit. Another 11 taluks are facing a severe rainfall deficit. At the hobli level, 38 hoblis have recorded excess rainfall, 91 hoblis have received above-normal rainfall, and 220 hoblis have experienced normal rainfall. However, 403 hoblis are facing a rainfall deficit, while 89 hoblis have reported a severe deficit.
The report notes that even traditionally high-rainfall districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, and Uttara Kannada have not received normal rainfall this season. The 17 districts reporting a rainfall deficit are Bidar (90 mm, 40 per cent deficit), Kalaburagi (73 mm, 43 per cent deficit), Dharwad (129 mm, 20 per cent deficit), Uttara Kannada (627 mm, 29 per cent deficit), Gadag (75 mm, 22 per cent deficit), Yadgir (90 mm, 22 per cent deficit), Raichur (73 mm, 25 per cent deficit), Koppal (57 mm, 33 per cent deficit), Haveri (80 mm, 46 per cent deficit), Davanagere (51 mm, 47 per cent deficit), Shivamogga (349 mm, 44 per cent deficit), Udupi (861 mm, 38 per cent deficit), Dakshina Kannada (668 mm, 43 per cent deficit), Hassan (143 mm, 33 per cent deficit), Chikkamagaluru (227 mm, 48 per cent deficit), Mysuru (54 mm, 55 per cent deficit), and Kodagu (349 mm, 51 per cent deficit).
Meanwhile, 13 districts have recorded normal rainfall. These include Vijayapura (80 mm, 19 per cent deficit), Belagavi (183 mm, 2 per cent above normal), Bagalkote (93 mm, 2 per cent deficit), Ballari (71 mm, 11 per cent deficit), Chitradurga (52 mm, 11 per cent deficit), Tumakuru (77 mm, 17 per cent above normal), Chikkaballapur (83 mm, 12 per cent above normal), Bengaluru Rural (84 mm, 16 per cent above normal), Kolar (67 mm, 9 per cent deficit), Mandya (67 mm, 6 per cent above normal), Bengaluru Urban (82 mm, 4 per cent above normal), Bengaluru South (82 mm, 5 per cent above normal), and Chamarajanagar (54 mm, 19 per cent deficit).
Among the taluks, Gudibande in Chikkaballapur district received 107 mm of rainfall, which is 75 per cent above normal, while Pavagada in Tumakuru district recorded 127 mm, registering 107 per cent above normal rainfall. In Belagavi district, Raybag received 137 mm of rainfall (64 per cent above normal) and Hukkeri recorded 130 mm (65 per cent above normal). Ballari taluk also received 109 mm of rainfall, which was 75 per cent above normal, according to the KSNDMC report.
