Karwar: One person was killed and more than 20 passengers were injured after a private bus travelling from Ballari to Goa overturned near Adlur Kanchina Bagilu on National Highway 52 in Ankola taluk early Saturday morning.

According to preliminary information, there were 36 passengers on board the bus at the time of the accident. One of the seriously injured passengers died while being shifted to hospital.

Six passengers who sustained serious injuries have been admitted to KIMS Hospital for treatment. Fifteen others suffered minor injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Ankola Government Hospital.

The sleeper coach bus reportedly lost control and overturned across the highway, completely disrupting traffic on the Yellapur–Ankola route for several hours.

The accident led to long traffic snarls, with vehicles lining up for kilometres on both sides of the highway, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.

Police personnel from Ankola Police Station rushed to the spot and supervised rescue and traffic management operations.

The overturned bus was later removed using a crane, following which normal movement of vehicles on the highway was restored.
