Viral video of railway track collapse in Kumta proven false, fact-check reveals
Kumta: 01 August,2024 (Bhatkallys News Bureau) Amid growing concerns due to recent landslides in Shirur and Wayanad, a video claiming to show a railway track collapse near Mirjan in Kumta has been circulating on social media. However, a thorough fact-check has confirmed that the video is fake.
The video, which has gone viral, depicts the earth collapsing under a railway track with water rushing beneath it. It was claimed that this incident took place on August 1 and prompted warnings to the railway department about an imminent train on the same route.
Worried citizens inundated local railway stations with calls seeking confirmation of the incident. However, railway officials reassured the public that no such incident had occurred and stated that the video was a fabrication. They also announced intentions to take legal action against those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
The same video has appeared on multiple social media platforms, including YouTube, with different locations being cited. Some posts claimed the video was from Rajasthan, while others mentioned Madhya Pradesh.
The claim that the video was from Mirjan near Kumta in Uttara Kannada district was thoroughly investigated. Local railway officials confirmed that no such event occurred in Kumta, dismissing the claims as false and intended to create panic.
Despite extensive searches, the origin of the video could not be independently verified. However, it was conclusively established that the video did not depict an incident in Mirjan, Kumta.
