Bhatkal: A 45-year-old man was killed after a lorry lost control and rammed four motorcycles and a police patrol jeep near Shirur in Udupi district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Nagendra Mahale, a resident of Shirur.
The accident occurred near Green Valley School in Shirur, around 15 km from Bhatkal, while an accident-hit goods lorry was being removed from a sloping stretch of the highway. Traffic had been halted and barricades placed on the road to facilitate the clearance operation.
Mahale and several others were reportedly standing by the roadside and watching the damaged lorry being removed with the help of a JCB. At the same time, another lorry carrying rubber from Kerala towards Maharashtra lost control while descending the slope.
The lorry first rammed four motorcycles parked along the roadside before colliding with the police patrol jeep. Mahale, who was standing near the motorcycles, was caught in the path of the lorry and died on the spot.
A case has been registered at the Byndoor Police Station in connection with the accident.
