Bhatkal, April 28: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) Parents may not always be able to spend enough time with their children due to the pressures of modern life, but many are encouraging them to take up martial arts such as karate, said Dr. Pushpalatha Mankal Vaidya, head of Beena Vaidya Educational Institutions.
She was speaking after inaugurating the 13th black belt distribution programme organised by Bhatkal Shotokan Karate Institute at the hall of Sri Kudure Beerappa Temple on Saturday.
She said karate not only helps in self-defence but also improves concentration among children.
Dentist Dr. Ravi Naik said those who have earned black belts should use their skills for self-protection and to help people in distress.
Journalist Ramachandra Kini said the institute, founded through the efforts of late Vasu Naik, has grown steadily over the years. He advised students that achieving a black belt is not the final goal and that continuous practice is important.
Presiding over the programme, Dr. Veerendra Shanbhag said students should give the same importance to education as they give to sports and training.
Chief examiner Hansi C. Rajan distributed black belts to 30 students.
Students who performed well in the SSLC and PUC examinations were also felicitated during the event.
On the occasion, the temple management honoured Dr. Pushpalatha Mankal Vaidya.
