Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stated that he “would never forgive” BJP’s Bhopal candidate Pragya Singh Thakur for her comments praising Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi's assassin. The BJP has initiated a flurry of disciplinary action against its leaders for laudatory comments on Godse. Mr. Modi made the remark while speaking to a TV channel on the last day of campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Following his statement, the party sent show-cause notice to BJP MPs from Karnataka Nalin Kateel and Ananthkumar Hegde, along with Ms. Thakur. BJP media cell head for Madhya Pradesh Anil Saumitra has been suspended from the party’s primary membership and asked to furnish an explanation for his remarks terming Mahatma Gandhi as the “father of Pakistan” in a social media post on Thursday. Party president Amit Shah said that while the statements by these leaders were their personal view, the BJP found it to be an outrage against “the party’s dignity and values” and served disciplinary notices. On Thursday, Ms. Thakur said Godse was a “patriot” but later apologised and retracted her statement after widespread criticism. On Friday, Mr. Hegde tweeted that he was “happy” over the debate on Godse, but later claimed that his account had been hacked. Mr. Kateel, a BJP MP from Karnataka, in a tweet compared Godse with Rajiv Gandhi. Source: The Hindu
