NEW DELHI: The Congress Party has come out with a mixed reaction to the Narendra Modi government's drastic move of taking Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes out of circulation. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala expressed support for the move on the basis of the devastating effect it is meant to have on black money. However, he attacked the government for announcing it would introduce a Rs 2,000 note.
"Congress has always supported any step against black money and will continue to do so," said Surjewala shortly after Prime Minster Narendra Modi's announcement.
He however expressed concern over the inconvenience the move would cause for farmers or families that have weddings coming up. "Are you not putting cumbersome burden on them by putting a limit on how much money can be withdrawn?" he asked.
He also levelled criticism against the government for its announcement that it would soon release and circulate Rs 2,000 notes. "Modiji has withdrawn the Rs 1,000 note on one hand, and he has introduced a Rs 2,000 note on the other side? Does it not defeat his own argument? What is the point of cancelling large denomination notes and replacing them with even larger denominations. Those who hoard black money will now be able to stash even more money," Surjewala said.
