Bhatkal 17 January 2019: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) "Bhatkal has a pool of players who have the potential to play at the highest level of cricket, and can represent the country in the Indian jersey, they are needed to be guided properly. I request the management of BMYF and other sports clubs like ANFA and Labbaik Nawayath to focus on that aspect and to push players from Bhatkal to play cricket at higher levels" said Bhatkal Dy.SP Valentine D'souza on Thursday January 17 at the Taluka stadium here at Nawayath colony.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of Nawayath Trophy 2019, leather ball cricket tournament organised by Labbaik Nawayath Association which started on January 1.
The closing ceremony was organised after the final match of the tournament between host Labbaik Nawayath and ANFA teams, wherein the latter defeated the host team to conquer the trophy and cash prize.
During his address, Valentine lauded the efforts of the organisers for organising such a tournament with high standards and high quality ground, while also speaking of the raw talent that needs to be guided in order to prosper and open the doors of opportunities in cricket.
"Cricket is something we at Bhatkal haven't contributed much in, it is like if one player can enter into the arena and play at higher levels, he will open doors for other players in Bhatkal as well, so the BMYF and other sports clubs like ANFA and Labbaik Nawayath should groom such talents and guide there way through. I would like to see a few players of Bhatkal playing for India or at least staying in the radar of national selectors in next couple of years, that will be a great thing to witness" D'souza added.
Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem General secretary, Altaf Kharuri, BMYF President, Imtiyaz Udyawar and others were present during the closing ceremony along with members and executive members of Labbaik Nawayath Association and players of several teams which participated in the tournament.
