Bhatkal 22 November 2018: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) Local shopkeepers near Bhatkal fish market have been complaining of pathetic and unhygienic waste management by the local fish vendors here at the fish market in Bhatkal, where the remains of cleaned fish are being dumped on a public road. A team of Bhatkallys.com visited the spot and found that although a TMC dumping van cleans the spot twice a day but the fish vendors, after cleaning fishes for their customers dump the remains in a box and keep it on the public road which leaks the stingy water on the road causing inconvenience to the passerby and the local shop owners. When contacted, Bhatkal TMC's senior health officer, responsible to look after hygiene and cleanliness of the Municipality limit area added "We are not aware of this situation, we send our van twice a day to pick-up the waste from the fish boxes, I will go visit the spot with my staff and will initiate strict action against the violators. Hygiene and cleanliness is our top priority and we will not compromise with it whatsoever" Sujiya, TMC Senior Health Officer added. Local shopkeepers however alleged that she was aware of the condition and that the authorities had not been paying heed to the problem letting them and the passerby to suffer. "You can find several types of insects and flies here, and not just mosquitoes and houseflies. This can result it health issues as we already face breathing problems when the waste is too much" Shabbir an employee of chicken shop opposite to the fish market told Bhatkallys.com "The solution to this is simple, the authorities should arrange the waste boxes to be kept inside the market in a designated corner and should strictly instruct the vendors to refrain from keeping it on public road" another vegetable trader said while speaking to Bhatkallys.com It will be interesting to see how the authorities in TMC react to the scenario and deal with it in the best of interest of the people and nearby shopkeepers, it will also be interesting to see if the TMC initiate action against any of the fish vendors or warn them to let go off this time.
