Bhatkal, May 17: In a district-wide drive against drunk and reckless driving, police in Uttara Kannada seized a total of 16 two-wheelers after their riders were found riding under the influence of alcohol and at high speeds. The operation was carried out as part of efforts to curb rising road accidents in the region.
According to officials, 13 vehicles were seized in Kumta, while three were confiscated in Murdeshwar during surprise checks held over the weekend.
Speaking to the media, Kumta Circle Police Inspector (CPI) Yogesh K.M. said that the majority of accidents involving two-wheelers in the region are a result of intoxicated and rash driving. “During the inspection, several speeding bikes were stopped and 13 riders were found to have consumed alcohol,” he said.
In a similar operation, the Murdeshwar police seized three two-wheelers after riders tested positive for alcohol consumption. Legal cases have been registered against all the offenders in both areas.
Officials added that the special enforcement drive will continue in the coming days as part of a larger initiative to promote road safety and reduce accident rates across Uttara Kannada district.
