Following a failed attempt to get a FIR registered on her gang-rape complaint, a woman reached the Aligarh senior superintendent of police’s office on Thursday with a startling piece of evidence – a severed ear.
As the senior officer was not present, she produced the mutilated piece of cartilage before the superintendent of police (rural) Yashveer Singh and complained that the police had not taken any action in her case even after two days. Singh then ordered the filing of two FIRs – lodged by both the parties involved – in the case.
The woman told HT that she was sleeping with her children on Monday night when four people from the neighbourhood entered their residence and raped her. When her husband – who was sleeping in a makeshift room outside the house – came to her rescue upon hearing the cries, they assaulted him too. In the melee that followed, the woman bit off a suspect’s ear.
The four later left, threatening the couple with dire consequences if they told anybody about the incident.
The woman said she alerted the police, who dropped by only to collect information. When the couple visited the police station the next morning, the police completed several formalities – including sending the victim for a medical examination – but lodged no FIR.
Gonda police have now registered a case against three people, including one Ravi of Dhatauli village, for allegedly gang-raping the woman. Police said the severed ear belonged to him.
The second case of assault and criminal intimidation has been registered against the victim’s husband on the basis of a complaint filed by the four accused. “I have ordered the Gonda police to investigate the matter,” said senior superintendent of police (Aligarh) Rajesh Pandey.
