After both NASA and SpaceX have detailed their plans to put humans on Mars, it looks like another player is readying up to enter the game.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has announced that it plans to build a major project in the Emirati Desert, one that will simulate living on a Martian colony.
Called Mars Science City, the project is estimated to cost approximately $136 million to build and will cover 177,000 square meters in the desert. Dubai’s media office says the project is meant to simulate environmental conditions for humans on Mars. It also “encompasses laboratories for food, energy, and water, as well as agricultural testing and studies about food security in the future.”
In addition, Mars Science City will also have a museum dedicated to humanity’s greatest achievements in space exploration, in an effort to inspire younger generations to pursue science and mathematics and ensure we’ll have enough scientists for our future in space.
This is just another in a list of lofty goals the UAE Space Agency has set for itself in the recent past. Earlier in July, it revealed plans to put a probe into Mars orbit by 2021, which would make it the first Muslim country to do so). It’s also already announced a plan to have its own human colony on Mars by the year 2117.
“The UAE is a great country with vision and understanding of the challenges we face and the rapid changes our world is experiencing,” Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced on Tuesday. “We believe in the potential of space exploration and in collaborating with global partners and leaders in order to harness the findings of this research and movement that seeks to meet people’s needs and improve quality of life on Earth.”
