Two computer science students from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore have bagged jobs with a pay package of around Rs 1 crore a year each, offered by a Singapore-based company.
The placement process for the final year students (who will be passing out in 2016) of various departments began in December and is almost complete. Majority of the students who registered have been placed.
"The two students have been offered international postings with a salary package of $ (USD) 1,50,000. They are from the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CAS) and have been selected for profiles in software development and algorithm design. This year, the salary packages are very high but there is still the possibility of even this figure being surpassed,” said an Institute source. US $1,50,000 translates to Rs 99,85,487, to be exact.
Salaries for students from the electrical sciences division - computer science, electrical and electrical communication engineering are usually high every year with companies offering big money.
"Students studying these subjects mostly dominate the placements with companies hankering for them. Their domestic salaries range anywhere from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh a year,” said the source. Most of the companies who recruit these students are in the field of machine learning, systems, security to name a few.
Students from other departments such as materials engineering, aerospace engineering and chemical engineering are usually offered an average salary of anywhere around Rs 8 to Rs 12 lakh a year, added the source. The companies that look out for these students are mostly from automobile, aerospace, steel industry etc.
The Department of Management Studies presently has a very small batch of 15 students. Companies in the field of data analytics are the usual recruiters in this department and this year is no different. Like last year, the highest salary offered is to the tune of Rs 19 lakh a year, said B Ashish Kumar, a student and placement co-ordinator from the department. "It is usually the established companies in data analytics who recruit from the department. However one or two start-ups from the same field have also recruited,” added Ashish. The average packages offered are around Rs 10 lakh.
Undergrad studies
Students of Bachelor of Science (B.S) programme are around 100 in number and participated in the placement for the first time, last year. "Very few, around 15 to 20 students register for the placements as majority of them opt to go for higher studies. Not many companies know about them as of now,” said the source.
