Train accident in West Bengal, 2 killed & 30 injured

New Delhi / Kolkata - 31 July 2011: Two people have been reportedly killed and nearly 50 have been injured in atrain accidentin West Bengal.

Times Now reports claimed that two passengers have been killed in the accident. However, Railways have confirmed only one death, that of an elderly woman.

There are also reports that two passengers are critically injured.

"The accident happened inMaldadivision between Jamirghata and Gourghata stations," said an Eastern Railway spokesman.

According to reports coming in, at least six coaches of Guwahati-Bengaluru express had derailed near Malda station and its engine was hit by a passenger train coming from the opposite side.

The railways has confirmed that the driver of the passenger train that was coming from the opposite side on the adjacent track tried to apply emergency brakes when he saw the derailed express train but could not completely prevent a collision.

Rains and darkness have hampered the relief operations.

A relief train has been rushed to the spot and medical teams from Malda station are already at the accident site.
