Bhatkal: In a bid to protest the death of one of its members in anti-Tipu demonstrations against the state government-sponsored anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan, activists of VHP and Bajrang Dal in Bhatkal staged a protest by blocking the roads on Friday morning.
The call for the state-wide bandh was given after a young man named Harish was allegedly stabbed to death near BC Road in Mangalore on Thursday.
Terming the state government as biased, Bajrang Dal leader Gonda Naik demanded investigations in both the matters and Rs 50 lakhs compensation for the family of the victims.
In about half a dozen cities across the state, including Mangaluru, vehicles remained off roads, and schools and colleges had to be shut down. Section 144 has been imposed in Mangaluru and other sensitive areas of the state for three days, news agency ANI reported.
Heavy security has been deployed in Karnataka with police vehicles patrolling Mangaluru and other cities, warning the people through the public address system not to form crowds or take out demonstrations. The VHP has been joined by other right-wing organisations, including the Bajrang Dal, the Sri Ram Sene and others in their protest against Tipu anniversary celebrations.
