Tension grips Kasaragod after brutal murder of Muslim cleric near mosque

Kasargod, Mar 21: Communal tensions have been flared up in Kasaragod district of Kerala after a Muslim cleric was hacked to death by unknown assailants on Monday night. Sporadic incidents of violence reported from different parts of the district during Tuesday’s Muslim League sponsored hartal in Kasargod assembly constituency demanding immediate action against the culprits. Mohammed Riyaz, a 34-year-old madrasa teacher, was found with his throat slit near the mosque premises at Churi in Madhur gram panchayat around midnight on Monday.download (3) A native of Kudagu and a teacher of Issathul Islam Madrasa, Riyaz was murdered by miscreants in his room adjacent to the mosque. The 'khatib', who delivers sermons and lives in the only other room in the compound, “came under heavy-stone pelting” when he exited his room, police quoted him as saying. He shut himself in the mosque office and announced through the public address system that Riyaz was being attacked, which alerted residents, officers said. The assailants had already fled by then and Riyaz was found dead in his room, police said. People's representatives such as MLA N A Nellikkunnu and top police officers including ADGP and district police chief rushed to the spot. The body has been sent for postmortem. MLA Nellikkunnu said personal enmity could not be the reason for the crime and called for a thorough investigation and quick arrest of the culprits. CD Network
