Suspended Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt arrested

GANDHINAGAR: Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who had implicated Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riots, was arrested by the Gandhinagar police on Friday, Times Now reported.

Bhatt was arrested in connection with an FIR filed against him by a police constable for allegedly threatening and making him sign a "false" affidavit about a high-level meeting called by Narendra Modi on February 27, 2002.

Bhatt has claimed his arrest to be politically motivated and has applied for bail, Times Now added.

Constable KD Pant, who was working under Bhatt during 2002 riots, had registered the FIR accusing Bhatt of threatening a public servant (Pant), fabricating false evidence and wrongful confinement.

According to Pant's FIR, on June 16 he got a call from Bhatt asking him to come to his residence for some work.

Bhatt, who is in the eye of storm after he filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court implicating Modi in the 2002 communal riots, was served a chargesheet by the Gujarat home department in connection with his alleged unauthorised absence from duty for the last ten months on Sept 18.
