Sunil Arora takes charge as Chief Election Commissioner

Sunil Arora, a retired 1980-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, took over as the new Chief Election Commissioner on Sunday. Mr. Arora, the senior-most Election Commissioner, succeeded O.P. Rawat, who demitted office on Saturday on completion of his tenure. As an IAS officer, Mr. Arora had held several key posts in the government. At the Secretary level, he served in the Information and Broadcasting Skill Development and Entrepreneurship ministries. Mr. Arora also had stints with other ministries in various capacities. He was Joint Secretary in the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Indian Airlines CMD for five years. Under his supervision, the Commission will conduct Lok Sabha polls next year. Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Odisha, Haryana, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh also have to be held in 2019. Source: The Hindu
