MANGALORE: Karnataka Minority Commission chairman Anwar Manippady advised Muslim students to follow rules regarding uniform in colleges.

He said parents should study college rules properly before admitting their wards. If the college calendar mandates uniforms for students, then it should be followed strictly by every student. They cannot demand school authorities to relax the rules based on religious grounds.

"If the school does not permit girls to wear hijab (headscarf) inside the classroom, then it should be followed," he said, referring to the case of Hadiya Iqbal (17), II PU student of Jain PU College in Moodbidri, who has been denied entry into classes wearing the shawl of the uniform as hijab. "These are trivial issues, which should not have been blown out of proportion," Manippady said.
Hadiya, who is unwilling to attend classes without wearing hijab as per Islamic faith, is out of the college for more than 100 days.

Deputy commissioner N S Channappa Gowda said he is awaiting directive from the commissioner, department of collegiate education. The row over wearing hijab had surfaced again in educational institutions in Dakshina Kannada after a gap of two years. It was Aysha Ashmin of SVS College, Bantwal, who was not allowed to wear hijab in classrooms in 2009.
