Kalladka, July 2: (CD Network) As many as 38 persons including 24 from minority community and 14 from majority community have been arrested by the Bantwal police following Saturday evening's group clash in the sensitive town of Kalladka.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal told media persons that the timely arrests by the police prevented the increment of the violence.

He said that all the arrested have been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days. As there was no space in the Mangalore Jail, we have sent some of the arrested to Udupi and Madikeri jails," he added.

On Saturday evening youths from two communities fought pitched battles using soda bottles and stones after some miscreants intercepted a van in which cattle was being transported. Tension escalated when they assaulted the driver of the van. At least six people had sustained injuries in the incident.

Three persons who sustained severe injuries in the stone and soda bottle pelting are now out of danger and recuperating at a private hospital in the city, SP said.

Mr Goyal however said that it was not confirmed whether the transportation of the cow in the cow which was intercepted on National Highway 48 in the town was legal or illegal as the relevant documents had not been found in the vehicle.

Stating that the situation at Kalladka is calm and under control, Mr Goyal said that DK district police stepped up patrolling in Bantwal town police station limits and across the district to prevent any spill over from Saturday's incident.

"We have posted two platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police and equal numbers of District Armed Reserve platoons on the spot," SP said.

Police have registered a case and counter-case of rioting and attempt to murder based on complaints from youths from either community, along with a specific case pertaining to transportation of cattle, SP said.
