School wall collapse: Rs. 4 lakh compensation to families of deceased students

Chikkodi, 12 July 2016:Eight children injured after a wall of a classroom collapsed at the Government Higher Primary Girls’ School are still being treated at a local hospital at Yamkanmardi, near Chikkodi. The classroom wall of the 50-year-old government school collapsed suddenly on Monday, killing two students - Shwetha Koli and Lagmavva Kattimani - on the spot. On Tuesday, Minister for Small Scale Industries and district in-charge Ramesh L. Jarkiholi visited the hospital and the families of the two students who were killed on the spot. Consoling the bereaved family members, the Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to both families. The cheque would be handed over to the families by Yamkanmardi MLA Satish L. Jarkiholi on Wednesday. He has also assured a job to a parent of both the deceased children. He told reporters later that an inquiry had been ordered into the incident. On Monday, Deputy Commissioner N. Jayaram announced Rs. 2 lakh as compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. In addition to this, the Education Department has also announced Rs. 50,000 compensation each of the bereaved families. School headmaster Mahadev B. Bhimgol, teachers V.V. Ghasti and A.S. Hiremath, and Cluster Resource Person L.G. Babli have been suspended on charges of lapses and negligence.
