Manama: A Saudi mother who lost two sons in a car accident for reportedly texting while driving has urged drivers to avoid using their phones.
“I urge all drivers, especially young people, to put aside their smartphones and avoid texting while behind the steering wheel,” Rayoof Al Shimmari, said.
“Drivers should focus on the road to help preserve lives and avoid accidents. We need to have more traffic campaigns to help promote awareness about the dangers of texting while driving,” the mother said, quoted by news site Hael News, referring to the large city in northern Saudi Arabia.
The mother and the police said that the two siblings were texting with their brothers who were waiting for their arrival when the accident occurred.
“Hearing about the death of my two sons was the most painful moment I have ever lived. There are no words that can ever describe the horrible tragedy and the terrible loss. I do not wish such a loss would be felt by any parent, so I strongly advise against texting while driving,” the mother, in her 60s, said.
According to the report, 78 per cent of the head-on collisions in Saudi Arabia were caused by driving using their mobile phones.
Texting while driving increases the risk for accidents four times, the report said, quoting traffic experts.
