Bhatkal 3 September 2018: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) The top roof of ancient Jain Basti built during the times of Vijayanagar rule at the downtown of the town, collapsed here on Sunday Afternoon 2 September. The structure was built back about 1500 years ago during the time of Vijayanagar rule when Jettappa Nayak was ruling this territory. The monument was constructed in 1556 A.D. In the year 1958 the central government declared it as great monument and took over the Basti under its control including 17 other monuments of the Taluka. However, the locals alleged that it is due to the irresponsibility of the department that led to this mishap. No casualties were reported during the incident.  (Bhatkallys News Bureau/Rizwan Gangavali/ Fristen Dias)
