Rising dengue cases pose concern in Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 16: Although pre-monsoon rains have brought relief to the people of Karnataka, the number of dengue cases has risen considerably. As of May 13, 2877 cases have been reported, marking a significant increase compared to the 1725 cases reported during the same period last year, according to statistics from the health department.

Taking proactive measures to curb the spread of dengue, the health department has initiated actions even before the onset of monsoon rains. Meetings have been held with district health officers and the mission director of NHM to strategize and coordinate efforts.

Asha workers and health department personnel are conducting house visits to supervise reported dengue cases at district hospitals. Awareness meetings are being organized in areas facing water scarcity, while the availability of testing kits and medicines is being closely monitored.

Dengue is transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, commonly found in tropical regions. If left untreated, dengue fever can be fatal. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, joint pain, bleeding, and swelling. In some cases, it may progress to haemorrhagic fever, which can be life-threatening. Currently, there is no specific treatment for dengue, and prevention focuses on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and maintaining clean surroundings.

Preventive measures include avoiding mosquito bites, consuming boiled and cooled water, covering the mouth and nose while sneezing, and wearing full clothing to minimize mosquito exposure. Vigilance and adherence to preventive practices are crucial in combating dengue fever and safeguarding public health.
