Record voter turnout in Bhatkal

04:16PM Sun 5 May, 2013

Bhatkal – Early reports of voter count for Bhatkal/Honnavar assembly constituency have surprised election officials as a clear picture of the day’s voting emerged late on Sunday night. Electronic Voting Machines (EVM’s) from the 234 polling booths were brought to the election center at the Sudhindra College.

Initial unconfirmed reports suggest 71 per cent voting in the constituency, as an official announcement is being awaited. Surprisingly, police officials also confirmed no election related FIR reports were registered.

The excellent voter turn-out exceeds expectations as strong support from local authorities, government officials, security forces and NRI residents ensured a largely smooth turn of events. Minor incidents were reported from Hanifabad, Farooqi Street, Taqia Street, Jali Panchayat and Konar Panchayat.

The voting machines have been sealed and kept with the election commissioner as vote count will begin in Kumta on May 8, 2013. More than 70 election officials took charge and executed their responsibilities in a largely fair election. An official announcement detailing the voter turnout will be made later tonight.
