Bhatkal: Rain showers in the town and the surrounding areas provided much-needed cheer and respite from the heat among the people on Friday.
While the day began with a light drizzle in the morning with overcast skies, rains lashed the town at around 12 pm.
While the town has been bearing the brunt of the scorching heat over the past few days, the rains came as a pleasant surprise and brought down the temperature in the evening.
The southwest monsoon is on its course and is expected to hit the Kerala coast by Saturday, though the onset might not be as strong as was being forecast earlier. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy rain might occur in some places of Kerala around Sunday. The monsoon is currently around the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
The Met office had predicted that the rains would arrive in Kerala on Sunday, with an error margin of four days.
