Bengaluru, Feb 23: The coastal districts of the state are likely to receive rainfall till February 27, according to the weather department. Rain is expected due to a depression forming over the Bay of Bengal.
The depression, centred near north Sri Lanka over the Bay of Bengal, is showing signs of moving eastward. As a result, the winds currently blowing from the Bay of Bengal are likely to weaken, and the rainfall situation will have to be closely watched. There is also a possibility that the rainfall may be less than what was initially forecast.
Good rainfall has been reported in the rural parts of Dakshina Kannada district. There is a likelihood of rain in Kasargod, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
The department has warned that adverse weather conditions may cause some disruptions to public life. Strong winds may lead to power outages in several places. Traffic congestion on roads is also likely due to rain.
There is a possibility of tree branches breaking and falling, and the public has been advised to remain cautious. Rain is expected in selected parts of the district, while the weather department has also cautioned about lightning and thunder.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has formed in the upper atmosphere over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Due to this circulation, a small low-pressure area has developed, which is drawing moisture-laden clouds over the sea towards Karnataka and Kerala in south India.
Heavy rain has been reported in several parts of Dakshina Kannada district, and rain activity is likely to continue for the next five days.
