Karwar: President Droupadi Murmu will visit the Kadamba Naval Base in Karwar on Sunday, where she is scheduled to undertake a sea sortie aboard a submarine, Deccan Herald reported.

In view of the President’s visit and the naval exercise, the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada has issued prohibitory orders on fishing activities along an 18-km stretch of the coastline, extending from Karwar to Majali. The restriction has been imposed to ensure security and smooth conduct of the programme.

According to a release from Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Murmu will sail from Karwar port on December 28 as part of the submarine sortie organised by the Indian Navy.

With this visit, President Murmu will become only the second Indian head of state to undertake a submarine voyage. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam had earlier carried out a similar sea sortie in February 2006 at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The Kadamba Naval Base, one of the largest naval bases in Asia, plays a key role in India’s maritime security along the western coast.
